Summary

As an ex-architect, and qualified energy consultant, John Tolson is well aware of the importance of energy saving in the home. He believes that houses of all ages should be brought up, as a minimum, to the current Building Regulations standards for insulation and heating. He has extensively renovated his Victorian house, with an emphasis on energy saving. There are high levels of insulation to both walls and roofs. Glazing to the south elevation has been maximised to increase solar gain and windows and roof lights are being updated to either triple or quadruple glazing. All windows and doors are draught proofed.

• High levels of roof insulation (insulated to a U value of 0.20 W/m2K with 60mm of phenolic rigid foam insulation board (Celotex), and multifoil Triso-Super 10).
• Timber dining room extension, with roof and walls insulated with 110mm of Celotex
• Some 600mm stone external walls dry-lined with 40mm Celotex on dabs)
• All windows and roof lights double-glazed, and some triple and quadruple-glazed.

Directions

New Buildings is situated to the south of Locks Hill in Keyford on the south edge of Frome. Turn down New Buildings Lane or Long Ground and it is right at the bottom of either road.
There are buses from the centre of Frome to Keyford, and the house is five minutes walk from the train station.
